What Really Happens To Your Bag After You Check It In

26 million bags go missing at airports every single year.

I know because I've been flying commercial routes for 18 years and I see it happen on every other flight.

Here's what the airline will never tell you: when your bag gets misrouted, nobody is actively looking for it.

They log it as delayed and wait for it to show up on its own. You file a form. They tell you to wait.

Hundreds of unclaimed suitcases piled up in an airport baggage hall

And here's the part almost nobody knows: most trackers were never built for a cargo hold.

It gets cold down there, and the cheap coin batteries inside them die fast. You land, open your phone, and your bag still shows the airport you left.

I got tired of watching passengers go through this. So I tested every tracker on the market to find what actually works.

None of the crew I fly with checks a bag without one of these anymore.

Only one is actually worth buying. Here's my honest ranking.

"After 18 years in the cockpit I've seen bags end up in the wrong country and never make it back. This is what I personally put in every bag I travel with."

What Makes a Tracker Worth Traveling With?

1. Global NetworkIt has to run on a network with billions of devices, not a small private one. The bigger the network, the wider the coverage and the more accurately you can see where your bag is.

2. Easy To Carry EverywhereA tracker that's awkward to carry ends up in a drawer. It should slide into your wallet like a credit card and disappear in a suitcase lining or a passport cover, with no bulge.

3. Durable And Water ResistantA checked bag goes through rough conditions: a freezing cargo hold, rain on the tarmac, heat and humidity when you land. A travel tracker has to be tough and water resistant enough to take all of it.

4. Rechargeable BatteryCoin batteries die mid-trip and are a nightmare to replace abroad. A real travel tracker recharges, and one charge lasts for months, so you're not charging it before every flight.

5. Discreet DesignIt shouldn't look like a tracker. If a thief takes your bag, they shouldn't know it's being tracked. Anything they recognize on sight gets pulled out and thrown away.

6. No Subscriptions, No Ongoing CostsIt shouldn’t have monthly fees, replacement batteries to keep buying, or extra apps to download.

My Top 5 Item Trackers (Ranked By Real Results)

After testing 23 popular trackers across 14 countries over 18 months, these are the only ones worth considering.

Spotminders Tracking Card, black, leaning on a pedestal

#1. Spotminders Tracking Card

4.8/5

After testing Spotminders across international travel for 18 months, I understand why over 300,000 travelers won't fly without it. It's the only one on this list that was built for the cargo hold.

Pros:

  • Runs on Apple Find My: 2.3 billion devices worldwide. Apple MFi certified.
  • 1.8mm thin. Slimmest on the market. Disappears into any wallet or suitcase lining.
  • Rechargeable. 8 months per charge, and no coin battery to die in the cold.
  • Built for traveling. Waterproof and very hard to break.
  • Looks like a credit card. Nobody knows it’s a tracker.
  • Play Sound. Rings loudly so you can find it nearby.
  • No subscriptions, no batteries to buy, no new app to download.
  • Lifetime warranty + 100-day money back guarantee
  • Best offer available. Buy 3 Get 2 Free.

Cons:

  • iPhone only
  • Not made for keys

My Experience: My bag was misrouted on a connection through Atlanta.

While every other passenger stood at the lost baggage desk filling out forms, I opened my iPhone, saw my bag in Terminal 1, and gave the desk the exact location.

Back in my hands within the hour. Everyone else was still waiting when I left.

Or as my crew members like to say: “Once you’ve seen it work wonders, you will never fly without it again.”

Conclusion: My No. 1 tracker for more than 200 flights a year. It has never disappointed me in 18 months, and every crew member I know has at least one or two as well now.

Apple AirTag held between two fingers

#2. Apple AirTag

3.4/5

Pros:

  • Apple Find My network. Excellent, and the same one my #1 pick runs on.
  • No subscriptions.
  • Play Sound. Rings loudly so you can find it nearby.
  • Beautiful design. IP67 water resistant.
  • Good choice for a set of keys.

Cons:

  • Coin battery, not rechargeable. About four months per cell, less in a cold cargo hold.
  • 8mm thick and round. A lump in a wallet, and it won't lie flat in a suitcase lining.
  • Every thief knows the white disc. It's the first thing they toss.
  • No way to attach it to a bag. The holder is sold separately, $29 for Apple's own.
  • One-year warranty only.

My Experience: Apple makes excellent products, and on a set of keys the AirTag is a good choice. But it was built for a keyring, not for a suitcase.

I've had passengers show me an AirTag that still said the airport we took off from, hours after we landed. The coin cell had quit somewhere in the hold.

And it's an 8mm disc that everyone recognizes. It makes a lump in a wallet, and it's the first thing a thief looks for.

Conclusion: A very good tracker for your keys. For a checked bag or a wallet it's the wrong shape with the wrong battery. Keep it on your keyring, and put something built for travel in your luggage.

Tile Slim card tracker held in a hand

#3. Tile Slim

2.3/5

Pros:

  • Card shaped, 2.5mm thin.
  • Works with iPhone and Android.
  • Water resistant.
  • Rings when it's nearby.

Cons:

  • Not on Apple Find My. Tile's own network is far smaller.
  • Only located when another Tile or Life360 user passes by.
  • Needs the Tile app and an account.
  • Battery can't be recharged or replaced. Lasts about three years.
  • Left-behind alerts need a $29.99 a year subscription.

My Experience: Tile is a card too, but at 2.5mm it doesn't fit a wallet as well as Spotminders at 1.8mm.

The network is the dealbreaker. It only gets a location when someone running the Tile or Life360 app walks past your bag. In a baggage hall abroad, that can take hours or not happen at all.

Conclusion: Right shape, wrong network, wrong thickness. Not what I'd trust with a checked bag.

Samsung Galaxy SmartTag2 on a keyring, held in a hand

#4. Samsung SmartTag 2

2.1/5

Pros:

  • Long battery life on a coin cell.
  • Keyring loop built in. No holder needed.
  • IP67 water resistant.

Cons:

  • Samsung Galaxy phones only. Won't pair with an iPhone.
  • Runs on Samsung's own network, much smaller than Apple Find My.
  • 8mm thick. Too bulky for a wallet or a suitcase lining.
  • Coin battery, not rechargeable.

My Experience: If you don't carry a Samsung Galaxy phone, this one doesn't exist for you. It won't even pair with an iPhone.

And it's a thick key fob. Like the AirTag, it belongs on a keyring, not in a wallet or a suitcase lining.

Conclusion: A solid product locked inside the Samsung ecosystem. For iPhone users it's not an option at all.

Unbranded tracking card next to a wallet and a phone

#5. Generic Amazon Tracking Cards

1.2/5

Pros:

  • Cheap upfront cost

Cons:

  • No Apple MFi certification
  • Cheap chips that overheat and fail
  • Battery lasts weeks not months
  • Zero warranty or customer support

My Experience: Chip overheats, the battery dies within weeks, and when it stops working there is nobody to contact.

Conclusion: All aesthetic and no substance. The savings upfront cost far more when your bag goes missing and the tracker is already dead.
